I retired from a career in IT in 2017 without a plan for how I would spend my days. My work-life up until then was all about planning and delivering projects, so how could I miss this?
Living a work-life with all the constraints in IT, there was no way I would become an artist. Yeah, I got that wrong too.
I started out with pyrography. That’s a posh name for wood burning. Specifically burning images of architecture onto hardwood. For eight years I worked to improve my art until I reached a point where I couldn’t see any more progress. Time to move forward.
More recently I had decided to free myself and experiment and explore other mediums and I have landed on ink and watercolour, loose sketching. I don’t have a name for it. Maybe urban sketching is a good description because I still focus on architecture but the guardrails are gone. No ruler, no pencil, not worried about painting between the lines and the freedom to choose inexact colours. Totally liberating.
So there you have it. I have finally escaped from a rules based career and I’m having fun with this new joyous art form.
Thanks for reading this and you’re invited to see my artwork at the Carleton Place Art Hub at 127 Bridge Street. See you there!
