Tradeswoman, artist, and teacher Lorrie Potvin, a queerishly Two-Spirited Citizen of the Métis Nation of Ontario, has worked and taught in the trades for over 30 years. Potvin holds an Inter-Provincial Red Seal in Auto Body Repair and Refinishing from Algonquin College as well as a diploma in Technological Education from the Faculty of Education, Queen’s University.
Potvin transforms scrap metal into sculptures ranging from simple forms such as globes and circles to stylized animals and birds. Her process begins with scavenging for century old equipment, tools, cutlery, automotive scraps and unique decorative metal objects from flea markets, antique shops and charity stores.
As an artist, Lorrie is self-taught. Through visualization and intuition, she cuts, welds, grinds and shapes pieces of scrap to bring the whole to life. Every sculpture Potvin makes is one-of-a-kind, made with the hope that each piece inspires others to see the beauty and the inherent stories found in discarded metal.
